Bioclimatic pergola or fabric pergola: which to choose?

July 28, 2026

Two main pergola families compete for our terraces: the bioclimatic pergola with orientable louvers and the fabric pergola with a retractable canopy. Here's how to decide.

The fabric pergola

A canopy extends and retracts over the terrace. Simple and often cheaper, it protects from the sun but filters heavy rain poorly and offers no fine control of light or ventilation.

The bioclimatic pergola

Its roof is made of orientable aluminium louvers. You tilt the louvers to precisely balance shade, light and air. Closed, they protect from rain; water drains through the structure. A true outdoor living room, usable in every season.

Durability

Treated aluminium doesn't rust and resists UV, whereas fabric wears and gets dirty over time. The bioclimatic option is the more durable investment.

Comfort and options

The bioclimatic pergola accepts motorisation, LED lighting, blinds and louvered panels for a truly bespoke space — which fabric rarely allows.

Our advice

For occasional use and a small budget, fabric will do. To enjoy your terrace all year with comfort and durability, the bioclimatic pergola is the best choice. Estimate yours with our configurator.
